Wow and wow! What big ribs they have here. I asked Michael what cut he was using and they are St. Louis ribs. They are huge meaty and delicious. I loved the fact everything was on Corelle dishes. The same plates we used at home when I was a kid. "Home" is a good descriptor for Pleasant's because that's where they make you feel you are. The sides were all great but the collard greens were perfectly cooked and a great accompaniment to the pork ribs. I loved their pecan pie too. As a special treat we got to meet Melanie too! Awesome dinner

I was looking for some good barbecue and I DEFINITELY found it here! Great price for excellent food! I will definitely be coming back for another finger-lickin-good experience.

OMG!!! We went to Pleasant's Bar B Q tonight and it did not disappoint. We're here for Spring Break and asked a number of locals where they go for good barbecue. So many recommended Pleasant's, we just had to go! Michael and Grady run a terrific restaurant and have super personalities!! Four of us had ribs and one had chicken. Everything was delish and the yummy sauce was tangy and worth licking every finger! Do yourself a favor and come back here multiple times so you can try the whole menu!!

My first Yelp review! I can't think of a better place to start it off. We came in on a long day of bike riding from Louisiana, a little after closing time. However, Mr. Pleasant opened back up for us and served us an excellent dinner. The ribs were meaty with a nice marinade. Some of the best I've had. Pies were excellent! Coconut was good, but pecan and sweet potato (!) were beyond bliss. We packed up some to go for a morning snack! All sides were good, too. With a couple beers, the best dinner of our trip. The owner and his visiting brother-in-law were great company. I look forward to my next visit!

..... What a great place...... I want that to be the first thing people read because it really is. BBQ is no different than many other things, when you take a step back, everyone has personal tastes, so there's a chance where you might not enjoy this style of BBQ over others. That said, I was a happy man. I was in town, and definitely needed a BBQ fix before I left and came to Yelp to help me find a choice and a good choice it was. The restaurant is smaller and unassuming, its not brash or Neon Signed... in fact the Sign is part of a somewhat unproven theory about BBQ joints... if the Pig on the sign is dressed to eat itself, its a good place. This sign had the Pig eating AND bathing itself in BBQ... win win! The Menu was pretty straight forward, which is what I like to see... it says, you are here for a few reasons and only a few reasons, not to be bombarded with 37 side items , burgers and fries, steak, or fish... you are here for BBQ. So another star in the column for them. Michael, the Owner was hospitable and kind, ready to converse with you as we had a good conversation about Yelp as a matter of fact and how it could bring in potentially more business for him. but, back to the food.... I was able to work in a sample plate of Sausage, pulled pork , and St. Louis style Ribs with a side of coleslaw and Potato Salad... Everything on my plate was cooked Extremely well and Seasoned well with a good Pecan wood, which for me, was a bit tough to distinguish so I needed Michaels help to figure that out. The St. Louis Style Ribs personally are not my favorite cut, again that's a personal thing, but I tried them and I liked them flavor wise but they did seem to be just slightly on the dry side and a bit over cooked as they was a slightly tougher outer skin... I do not eat St. Louis style ribs that often so maybe there are some who like a crispier outer skin... However the flavor was really good. The Sausage , was like hugging a teddy bear... it just made ya happy to eat it.... smoky, flavorful.. with a light snap when you bit into it... job well done. The Pulled pork was clean, soft, flavorful.. they really nailed it and the sides were also really good, its definitely a place where you go to feel like you walked into the country house next to a farm, got your paper plate filled with goodies and sat on the porch with a Tea and watch the sun set... Seriously... its a simple place and simple is good... really good.. For desert, I was literally blown away at the Coconut Pie.... BEST PIE I HAVE EVER HAD... the crust was crunchy.. the coconut had been browned and was so strong in flavor it was seriously amazing.... I felt like I stepped on a Gold Mine and immediately wanted to shove them down my shirt and hide in a cave. to finish out, the pricing really wasn't too bad at all.. for the sample platter and deserts I had , I walked out with tip for under 25bucks and had a sweet tea to go. Michael-- you have a great place here... keep it up

Passing thru town and happened across this hole in the wall BBQ joint...OMG!!! The pulled pork sandwich, the owner, and the service were just simply amazing, we talked to him the whole time we there. It was like we knew each other all our lives. (He is a true gentleman) The pork was saturated in their own amazing tasting sauce, wasn't to spicy, it was just right. The homemade pecan pie and coconut pie were equally delicious. I HIGHLY recommend this place if you are a BBQ lover.

For openers, if you believe the best barbecue is usually found in the worst part of town, in a place with bars on the windows and just enough grease on the table to write your initials, then this isn't it. If, on the other hand, you think a 30 year old family owned joint in a brightly colored cement block building can turn out world class 'cue, you're probably at Pleasant's BBQ in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. And if you're at Pleasants, you probably were greeted at the door by owner Michael Pleasant. Don't know about you, but I always feel better when the guy whose name is over the door is there not only to meet and greet, but to make sure everything is as it should be. John Robinson did that at Big John's in Peoria, ditto Arthur Bryant at Bryant's in Kansas City and today, Anna's at her place in Atlanta. Pleasant's seats maybe 30 and is sandwiched (no pun intended) between two other barbecue joints less than four blocks in either direction on Government Street - and this, the one in the middle is the place to be. Like Murky Water's Blues and BBQ in Gulfport, they cook low and slow using pecan wood, easy to come by in this neck of the woods, not so much so further north. Pleasant's offers the gamut: ribs, pulled pork, brisket, chicken and sausage... we tried four of the five - any one of which would have made for a good meal in and of itself. That said, not sure which is tops, but their ribs and the brisket are both world class. They man up and use St. Louis cut ribs and the meat doesn't fall off the bone (which usually means they've been par boiled or steamed before being slathered and slapped on the grill (think Dreamland's franchise operation in Atlanta). The subtle pecan smoke flavor is there, accented by their secret rub and served with their original sauce. "The secret is in the sauce," says owner Michael Pleasant. Maybe, but more likely the rub and the pecan wood. The sauce is good (they sell a lot of it), but even a great sauce can't make bad meat good. It all starts with the meat and the rub and the smoke. Pleasant's cut their brisket into maybe eighth of inch slices and then toss each slice on the grill before getting them to the table. They're not fall apart over-cooked, but just the right consistency, moist and full flavored. The pulled pork is good, maybe even a little better than good - but places a distant third behind the tie for first: the ribs and the brisket. Ditto the smoked sausage. Good, maybe even very good - but not the best thing on the menu. Speaking of things on the menu, for reasons known only to the Pleasant's (Miichael's Dad started the place at the current location in 1984, but was smoking cue in Ocean Springs literally 50 years ago), they have daily specials that are off the barbecue menu: meat loaf on Tuesday, blackened chicken fettuccine on Wednesday, smothered pork chops on the next day and fried catfish the day following. Why, when your barbecue is this good do you waste time serving up anything else? Let's talk about the sides: all good. Yes, this is probably starting to read like a paid advertisement, but if you'll read any of the Brown Shoe Gourmet's 70+ other 'cue reviews, you'll see that this guy who has spent a lifetime in pursuit of the perfect barbecue is not easily or often this pleased. The potato salad was outstanding, the beans, with a touch of molasses, were very good and the slaw was one of the best we've had of late. If your travels take you within 20 miles of Ocean Springs, turn on the GPS and check out some exceptional five star barbecue at Pleasant's - started 50 years ago, in its current location 30 years, and turning out world class ribs and brisket, with owner Michael Pleasant meeting, greeting, seating and serving.

First review here and for a reason. This place has the best ribs I've ever had. Homemade BBQ sauce should be patented. Collard greens and potato salad were excellent. Wife got the same thing and was equally pleased. If we ever come back to Mississippi, we'll definitely be coming back to Pleasant's! Great service and really great prices!

We stumbled on this great place this weekend. The food is amazing---bbq, collard greens, potato salad. The best sweet potato and pecan pies that I have had. Michael is the owner--a great hospitable, southern gentleman. Next time I'm in the area, I'm headed back.

Well, we're just back from Pleasant's and currently enjoying our food coma! My husband, 3 kids and I had pulled pork, ribs, beans, potato salad, cole slaw & coconut pie to finish. My 8yo daughter loudly proclaimed that was was in, and I quote, "Pork Heaven"!! One of my sons said that he needs to lay down and "rest his stomach"! Everything was fantastic and the beer was really chilled down. Loved it so much that we had to buy a bottle of sauce as an edible souvenir. If you're in the area...put on your fat pants and get to Pleasant's!

Stopped by here on a journey for barbecue in Mississippi, and as the other reviews say - it is all about the sauce. The sauce is a sweet/molasses/tomato style sauce, and a healthy dose is mixed in with the pulled pork. Ate the brisket, pulled pork, and ribs. The ribs were the star of the show. They had a nice smoke to them, and were finished off on the grill with the sauce before serving. Since I am not a fan of sauce-driven barbecue, I would only give this joint three stars. The four stars are given for the pitmaster, Michael Pleasant, who spent some time with us while we ate.

Wow! We are on our way home to Texas and just passing through Mississippi. We decided we needed to try some Mississippi bbq and we chose this place. We were definitely not disappointed. Smokey, rich meat that melted in our mouths and covered in a zingy sauce that we just couldn't stop licking off of our fingers. We had bbq sandwiches and ribs and we want to go back and get more! Too bad we have to get back to Houston. Now being from Texas, I know bbq, so trust me when I say that this is yummy!

Found this place as we were leaving the Beau Rivage headed back to Atlanta. Great food and great service. We had the sausage and brisket with all the sides, everything was exceptional! So good we decided to get food to take on the road back to Atlanta.

Talk about friendly! The owner came right over and introduced himself, chatted a little, told me a little about the restaurant and the food. When I mentioned that I was from out of town and that my home was under a tornado warning (got a text alert on my phone), he immediately turned on Weather Channel so I could see what was going on. I went for lunch and had a BBQ pork sandwich, baked beans and potato salad for under $8. That plus tea plus tax was $10.02. The pork BBQ was very good with a nice taste of smoke. I usually don't like my BBQ bathed in sauce when it's served, but I understand why a smaller restaurant needs to do this. And the sauce and pork were both very good. The sides weren't remarkable, but were good. Another out-of-town couple were sitting near me and I overheard them say they'd been several times during their vacation to try everything on the menu. They were having ribs for the second time. Next time I want to try the ribs. All-in-all, one of the friendliest little places I've been to with some really good BBQ. It's small, not touristy at all, and definitely not like it's larger and better known competitor about 5 miles away, but I like it that way.

This is just a hole in the wall - I almost missed seeing it. But those are the best places for good food. I had the brisket with a taste of the sausage because I had trouble deciding. The thing I remember the most is that the owner was friendly and visited with me. Since I was alone, that was a nice touch. He saw my t-shirt from Hawaii and since he had also just returned we began to share stories of our trip. You know, food always tastes better when you feel comfortable.

Now I have been to Lockhart TX (bbq capital of america) and owner Michael Pleasant has a sauce that can rival any other smokehouse. He is a great man to talk to and will keep you coming back with his food and personality. The ribs have a great bark smothered in his sauce. The chicken dinner came highly recommended and didnt disappoint. His potato salad had me dreaming. Go check it out for yourself and thank me later!

In the area looking for some good bbq, and found this place. Without a doubt, some of the best smoked chicken and brisket.. perfection, and the sauce WOW! All the sides complement the meal so well. So good, went back for round two. Mike, thanks for the great food and hospitality.

Wanted some good old Mississippi BBQ driving from Florida to Louisiana and boy was I not disappointed. I've had Texas BBQ, Memphis BBQ, Alabama BBQ, heck even some BBQ in Florida (yes, such a thing exists and is not half bad if you go to the right spot). This little small whole in the wall is located in Ocean Springs, MS which is a car drive over the bridge from the casinos in Biloxi, MS. Never had been there before in my life. It's right next to the a tire shop which is also owned by Mr Pleasant and the family. I had the lunch special with the brisket sandwich, beans and potato salad and a sweet tea. The brisket had some good smokey flavor on it. The sauce was a little on the salty side but still good. Sweet tea had a perfect balance of taste without being too disgustedly sweet a la McDonald's sweet tea. I took to go 1 slab of ribs and a small sweet potato pie. Ribs were definitely awesome and had a rich flavors to them. They didn't fall off the bone per se but easily pulled off with ease. Not quite as good as Louie Mueller in Taylor, TX, but definitely up there. The people there are the best part. Some of the friendliest nicest people you will ever meet.

This is one of those places I was really looking forward to because of the reviews. Unfortunately, I left extremely disappointed with the food. The ribs were dry and did not have much flavor. The pork sandwich was ok but didn't have any special drive out of your way flavor either. Maybe it was a bad day to go, I am not sure why the food wasn't as good as reviewed by others. That said, it gets two stars because everyone was very friendly and the sweet tea was really good. Really wanted to like this place but don't think it is worth the trip off I-10 to give it another try.

My husband and I had dinner here tonight. We just moved to the area and are happy to find this amazing BBQ place. The staff was amazing, very friendly, and the food was even better. My husband had the half a chicken dinner with potato salad and coleslaw. I had the brisket sandwich with beans and collard greens. Everything was amazing the meat was well cooked and the sauce was delicious. We will definitely visit again. We visited another local BBQ joint that has an amazing reputation. I have to say the food and experience at Pleasants was far superior.

Simply the best barbecue on the Gulf coast. Friendly and personal service, and the price is fair. The pulled pork and grilled chicken are great. Don't miss this one for lunch if you are in Ocean Springs.

Gosh, we love Pleasant's BBQ, and Michael Pleasant! We fell upon it one day when we were passing thru Ocean Springs, and now we make our travel plans to bring us there again and again (from the Mid-Hudson Valley in NY, that's a commitment!). Unpretentious, clean, welcoming, and the food is so, so good. If you're lucky, you may get to see one of Mr. Pleasant's bright, beautiful kids, and his lovely mom at the cash register. I had a bottle of the sauce sitting on my kitchen counter for the longest time, just because I liked to see it there. I recently used it, and yes, the sauce is that good! Even my modest efforts at BBQ were ennobled by it. Now I have to go back again to get more bottles!

After living in the area for awhile I had given up on finding good barbecue generally I drive to mobile. I came across this place while on yelp and let's face it the locals tend to hype the barbecue at certain restaurants in this area so I really wasn't expecting much. The restaurant was clean it reminded me of the small barbecue restaurants back in Texas. Michael Pleasant the owner was working the front. He greeted me and my wife when we entered and continued to make sure our experience was a good one. I had the half rack, potato salad and greens it was fantastic. ribs and greens are two dishes you can easily destroy but they were perfectly cooked. My wife had brisket sandwich she said it was great and she's not a big barbecue fan. I can't believe I've overlooked this place. I will definitely be back!!

Visiting Biloxi, MS and took the advice on Yelp to try Pleasant,s BBQ. It was excellent advice. The restaurant is not flashy on the outside, but the food was excellent. My wife and I had the pulled pork sandwiches with baked beans and potato salad. The pork was tender and plentiful...the beans were tasty and the potato salad creamy with a mild taste. Michael Pleasant says the "secret is in the sauce" and he's right. We have a bottle going back to Indiana with us. There's no question that this restaurant has what it takes when it comes to BBQ. If you are in the Biloxi/Ocean City, MS area, stop by and treat yourself...it's well worth the stop.

We have been on a bbq binge since leaving Chicago and while driving through Ocean Springs we found a wonderful meal at PLEASANT'S. We tried their pulled pork sandwiches and sides and they were as good as we hoped they'd be. Expertly smoked and their sauce sets them apart from any competition. Don't forget their home made pies. We got the pecan pie and coconut pie. The sweet potato pie was still in the oven! After our lunch, Michael, the owner, was nice enough to show us his "Mobil smoker". All in all it was a very "pleasant" experience! Don't miss it. Gitcha- some!!!

Pretty good BBQ and I'm coming from St. Louis. It truly is in the sauce. I had the beef sandwich special with potato salad. The beef was well seasoned and the bun complimented nicely. My husband wanted a pound of the beef but opted for the 1/2 pound which was a very generous portion. My 3-year-old ate an entire bowl of the beans. It's kind of hidden, but once you find it you'll be glad. The prices are very reasonable too.

For people who like to eat out a lot, or at least people who like to go on road trips, there is this dream of walking into some random place that you might have missed if you we're paying attention and having a meal that defies your expectations. That place may be a diner with the best apple pie in America or an eatery attached to a gas station off the interstate that oddly enough serves the best Chinese food you've ever had. But you're always a little reluctant to go in at first, and your bravery is rewarded. Pleasant's BBQ is such a place. Located in trendy Ocean Springs, Pleasant's has an unassuming storefront but just the bare minimum of what you'd expect from a restaurant. Within a few blocks of the restaurant are designer stores, fine dining restaurants, and bars. But Pleasant's is just four walls and a some tables and chairs. I happened upon this place while pub crawling in Ocean Springs on St. Patrick's day 2011. I was hungry and all the other places in the area were jam packed. Pleasant's was just beyond the crowded areas and was able to accommodate our large group. Indeed, we were the only customers there when we arrived. I ordered the Pleasant's special, a pulled pork sandwich with baked beans and coleslaw. The food won me over. Everything tasted as it you'd imagine it would when eating southern BBQ. I'm not sure what their secret is, but according to them, "The secret is in the sauce!" Whatever the secret is, it works. Definitely check this place out if you get the chance.

My wife and I stopped in based on the reviews here, and couldn't have been happier. The BBQ was authentic and absolutely delicious. Michael, the owner was kind and gracious. We had fried catfish, a pulled pork sandwich, brisket, potato salad, baked beans, coleslaw, hush puppies and some of the homemade pie (Yeah, I put it away, but you won't blame me when you try it...). Every bite was perfect - you couldn't ask more of a BBQ joint, it's exactly what you want one to be. Prices were incredible, the food was even better and the owner is a good dude. It's worth driving out of the way for!

This is what I dreamed southern BBQ would taste like. We were visiting from Portland OR. When we walked by Pleasant's and my husband's foodie radar went off. Boy was he right- Porky smokey deliciousness served by the sweetest "Mom" ever. The ribs, chicken and sides were perfect. We were in a contented trance as we strolled back to our hotel. It wasn't until we got there that we discovered that my husband had left his wallet at Pleasant's. When we returned to pick it up we had a good laugh with "Mom" who had stored it in a paper sack in the register. Make sure you order BOTH the pecan and coconut pies- dinner for two under $24.

About Applebee's

Applebee is an American full-service restaurant brand popularly known for its signature Riblets. Applebee was conceptualized in 1980 by Bill and TJ Palmer in Atlanta, Georgia. At first, the restaurant was named T.J. Applebee's RX for Edibles and Elixirs. After the concept was acquired by W.R. Grace and Company, the restaurant was renamed as Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar. Later the company and the Applebee's concept changed hands with Abe Gustin and John Hamra who started the first Applebee's franchise restaurant in Kansas City.

Later in 2007, IHOP Corp. now known as DineEquity, Inc. acquired Applebee's and began their journey together to make Applebee's the world's largest full-service restaurant chain. Today, Applebee's serves at more than 1,830 locations worldwide. The Applebee's menu ranges from Appetizers and Salads to heavy meals consisting of ribs and steak.
